MORE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CHRIS STAFFORD
A page of gargoyles and grotesques from Chris Stafford. Above, a very nice, but basically carved, gargoyle from the church of St Mary at Findon. On the right hand side of the page, two carvings from St Mary, Pinchbeck. The top one looks a little alien in concept! As Chris says in his E Mail, regarding the lower picture..."Two heads are better than one".... unles, of course, you adopt the adage of "Three Heads Are Better Than Two" as depicted below at Navenby, which can be found in between Lincoln and Grantham.
To the right of that, a grotesque stone head from Lower Benefield, the church of St Mary. This stone head, of superb quality, can be found there. Superb craftsmanship on this one, just look at the eyes looking off to one direction and the quality of the carving around the teeth.
The picture left comes from Brant Broughton, and illustrates nicely why people like Chris and myself find these carvings so fascinating.
The figure on the right lifts his shirt, shows everything that he has got and...well...that's just not nice!! The figure of the right of the photograph passes comment by holding his nose. Chris said in his E Mail that he was delighted to see this, and I am not surprised!
The three pictures below that, three gargoyles of different styles from Bottesford, the church of St Mary.
As always, sincere thanks to Chris Stafford for E Mailing these over to me.
