HOLME. CHURCH : ST GILES

Holme is a village near to Yaxley in Cambridgeshire. The very beautiful church is that of St Giles.

All of the photos on thgis page were taken by Ken Alvey from the excellent St Giles web site The photographs are used with his permission, for which I am extremely grateful.

On fascinating story that Ken told me about was the Floating Church that was in the area from the very late 1800's until the early 1900's. This was a barge that was converted in to a church, which was then towed around the parish by a horse, bringing the church to the people. For more pictures of St Giles, please click link below...

CONNINGTON. CHURCH : ST MARY

I made my first ever trip to Connington at the start of September 2007, on what was the first day of a two week Summer holiday for myself.

The church of St Mary is a fine structure, which dominates the surrounding countryside.

Sadly, the church was locked but I had a very pleasant half an hour or so wandering around the exterior, with my only company being some geese in the field ajoining the church.

Some very finely carved old graves here, with a particular favourite being pictured above, with a crudely carved representation of a skull.

The village had an airfield during the Second World War, as can be seen in the impressive village sign, which features a bomber and the church. A very moving monument to those who died can be found in the church grounds, with the head of a pilot looking out over what used to be the airfield.

The photograph of the exterior of St Mary's church, Connington, the shot of the impressive interior and the photograph of the pilot's head monument are all kindly provided by Chris Stafford.
