Photograph Of The Week

UPDATED NOVEMBER 20TH 2008

I was thinking the other day about which were my favourite places within the catchment area of this site. Obvious places for me are the church grounds at Cotterstock, looking South towards the river Nene. Gorgeous countryside, and normally a friendly white horse looking to con me out of my lunch.

In front of Crowland Abbey would be another favourite place, gazing in awe at the wonderful frontage. Another on the list would be the view from the main road in to Stamford, looking at the church at Barnack. All places that I am very fond of, but to my mind, the view above represents the best of the lot.

Many of you will recognise the church as being St Mary at Fotheringhay. Arguably, one of the most historic churches of those looked at by this site. Also one of the most picturesque! I love this spot! The photograph was taken from the South of the river, a short distance from the old humped back bridge.

It had been a very nice afternoon until I arrived at Fotheringhay. The sun decided to go in behind a large black cloud and I had to wait about twenty minutes for it to emerge again. It duly obliged, for a minute or two, and I took a few photographs. The narrow boat, by the way, appears to have been there almost as long as the church!

Whilst the sun was behind cloud I was bored and decided to investigate the edges of a recently ploughed field close to the river. Found quite a few Oyster shells. As a result, I wondered if there was Roman occupation in the area at any point!

As always, it is a delight to visit Fotheringhay. One day I want to take the exact same photograph but with the area covered in snow!

UPDATED NOVEMBER 13th 2008

I had a request this week regarding the Photographs Of The Week. I was asked if I could include some photographs showing some Autumnal colours.

The request was from regular visitor Maureen, who visited on day one of the site being formed, and who has been responsible for most of the 70,000 hits recorded so far!

Okay, Autumn recorded in four photographs. Top, late afternoon sunlight shines through the trees in to the church grounds at Egleton, a picturesque village near to Oakham.

Below that, Autumn colours at Nassington, East Northants. Look at that sky...glorious! Don't you believe it though as there was a huge black cloud behind me when I took that picture and the weather deteriorated pretty quickly.

Nassington really is one of my most favourite churches.

Below left and this photograph was taken from the West end of the church grounds at Yaxley. The horses seem to match the Autumn colours nicely here. These were some of the more aloof horses seen on my travels. They treated me with total indifference, unlike my favourite white horse at Cotterstock who once stuck his nose in my dinner tin and tried to steal a tuna and cheese roll and a packet of Thai Sweet Chicken crisps!

Below right and the church grounds at Oakham. What a delightful place. Very strongly recommended if you have never been there! In my all too short time here I managed to take about 130 photographs! I was like a child on Christmas morning not knowing which way to look!

I took a photograph of the tower here, with some gorgeous clouds scudding by over the top of it. This is going to be next weeks Photograph Of The Week.

Next update, Thursday November 20th. Bye all, Robin site owner.
