THORNEY. THORNEY ABBEY
I would think that, along with Crowland Abbey and Fotheringhay church, Thorney Abbey is the most impoirtant religious building in my catchment area. I knew that this building was going to be a bit special but it still took my breath away when I turned the corner and saw it for the first time.
I would think that this was the friendliest welcome that I have had in nay church visited as well. An extremely pleasant man found a scruffy, unshaven man with camera (me!) lurking in the churchyard and gave me a guided tour of the building, inside and out. One of the most interesting facts that he told me was that the Abbey used to be a lot bigger, and was once a similar size to Peterborough Cathereral.
Some lovely stone heads to be found here, and some lovely gargoyles, but these were up very high and the photos of these didn't come out too well.
As a lover of graves please note that floor marker from inside the Abbey, pictured bottom left, and note the old spelling!!
This is well worth a look if you have the time, as is the whole village come to think of it. Very nice chip shop not far down the road as well......
